Compound Adjectives

Compound adjectives consist of usually two words when put together create an adjective. The compound adjectives are often but not always written with hyphens -.

 

Compound adjectives can be formed with:

 

adjective + past participle

 

long-forgotten, fast-paced, short-sighted

 

adverb + past participle

 

well-written, happily married, cleverly-told

 

noun + past participle

 

heart-broken, candle-lit, sun-powered

 

noun + adjective

 

camera-ready, family-oriented, gluten-free

 

noun + present participle

 

money-saving, time-consuming, heart-wrenching

 

adjective + present participle

 

loose-fitting, smooth-talking, slow-burning

 

adjective + noun

 

high-speed, long-term, low-rate

 

adjective + a singular noun

 

ten-second, five-storey, two-way
