Noun or Verb?

Some nouns are also verbs. The only difference is the way they are stressed and pronounced.

noun: the stress is on the first syllable

verb: the stress is on the second syllable

Their meanings are very similar in most cases.

 

nouns/verbs distinguished by stress:

conduct, discount, entrance, progress, export, import, object

 

nouns distinguished by pronunciation

noun: the ending is pronounced with no "voice" or is pronounced is softly

verb: the ending is stressed

 

nouns and verbs with the same spelling and pronunciation

 

act, attempt, blame, book, call, climb, copy, cost, dance, drink, drive, fall, fear, help, joke, kiss, laugh, try, vote, wait, walk, wash, wish

 

bang, bark, buzz, grunt, hiccup, moan

 

butcher, judge, model, nurse
