Word Order

The word order in English follows straightforward rules.

1. Statements:

The basic Word Order is Subject-Verb-Object (SVO)

  • She (S) bought (V) a new car (O).

2. Questions:

The word Order in Yes/No Questions:

Auxiliary Verb-Subject-Verb-Object (ASVO)

  • Did (auxiliary) she (S) buy (V) a new car (O)?

The word order in Wh-Questions:

Question Word-Auxiliary Verb-Subject-Verb-Object (QWASVO)

  • What (question word) did (auxiliary) she (S) buy (V)?

3. Negative Statements:

Negative Statements with "Not":

Subject-Auxiliary Verb-Not-Verb-Object (S-AV-Not-V-O)

  • She (S) did (auxiliary) not (negation) buy (V) a new car (O).

Negative Statements with "Don't/Doesn't/Didn't/Hasn't/Haven't/Hadn't/Won't":

Subject-Auxiliary Verb-Not-Verb (S-AV-Not-V)

  • She (S) doesn't (auxiliary) buy (V) expensive things (O).

In summary:

  • Statements follow the typical Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order.
  • Questions vary based on whether they're yes/no questions (Auxiliary-Subject-Verb-Object) or wh-questions (Question Word-Auxiliary-Subject-Verb-Object).
  • Negative statements typically include the negation "not" after the auxiliary verb or employ contractions like "don't" or "doesn't".
