Spelling Changes

Here is a short list of spelling changes in various tenses:

  1. Adding "-ed" for Past Tense:

    • In regular verbs, the past tense is often formed by adding "-ed" to the base form of the verb:
      • Example: Walk (base form) -> Walked (past tense)
  2. Doubling the Final Consonant before Adding "-ed" in One-Syllable Verbs:

    • When a one-syllable verb ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel, and the stress is on the final syllable, the final consonant is usually doubled before adding "-ed":
      • Example: Stop -> Stopped
  3. Changing Final "Y" to "I" before Adding "-ed":

    • When a verb ends in a consonant plus "y," the "y" changes to "i" before adding "-ed":
      • Example: Carry -> Carried
  4. Irregular Past Tense Forms:

    • Some verbs have irregular past tense forms that do not follow the standard "-ed" pattern. These forms must be memorized:
      • Example: Go (base form) -> Went (past tense)
  5. Changing "-ie" to "-y" before Adding "-ing":

    • When a verb ends in "-ie," change the "-ie" to "-y" before adding "-ing":
      • Example: Die -> Dying
  6. Dropping the Final "E" before Adding "-ing" or "-ed":

    • When a verb ends in a silent "e," drop the "e" before adding "-ing" or "-ed":
      • Example: Write -> Writing, Written
  7. Adding "-s" for Third Person Singular Present:

    • In the third person singular present (he, she, it), most verbs add "-s" to the base form:
      • Example: Walk (base form) -> Walks (third person singular present)
  8. Irregular Third Person Singular Forms:

    • Some verbs have irregular third person singular forms that do not follow the standard "-s" pattern:
      • Example: Have (base form) -> Has (third person singular present)
  9. Changing the Base Form for Third Person Singular Present:

    • Some verbs undergo a vowel change or addition before adding "-s" for the third person singular present:
      • Example: Do (base form) -> Does (third person singular present)
  10. Adding "-ing" for Present Participle:

    • In the present participle form, most verbs add "-ing" to the base form:
      • Example: Eat (base form) -> Eating (present participle)
