Used to and Would (for the past)

Used to is used talk about states or things you did repeatedly in the past but you no longer do in the present. It is used with both action and state verbs.

 

I used to smoke = I don't smoke anymore

She used to have a house by the beach = She doesn't have a house by the beach now

They used to be so lazy = They are not lazy anymore

 

Would is used to talk about repeated actions and habits in the past that you no longer do in the present. It is used only with action verbs.

 

I would drive for hours to and from work every day = I don't drive for hours to and from work every day anymore

 

I would exercise a lot = I no longer exercise a lot

 

I would write a report every month = I no longer write a report every month
